Got a phone that you don’t want to part with, but can’t justify paying the same amount once you’re out of your contract? Or maybe you’re on Pay and Go with a phone that works well for you, but topping up for credit is becoming more and more costly? With SIM only plans from Three, you’ll be able to keep your current phone and get a great deal – read on for more info!
Three UK is a mobile telecommunications and internet provider that operates in the UK as a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa. The company launched as the UK’s first commercial video network in March 2003. Today it uses its own network infrastructure to provide 3G and 4G services.
The Three mobile network launched in March 2003, with handsets going on sale late in the month. Three’s retail stores were opened at the same time the network launched. In 2006, Three announced that it had purchased 95 high street shops from networks O2 and The Link.
Three launched its 4G network in 2013, and offers this faster service at no extra cost to 3G services. Recently, Three has been voted the most reliable network in the UK by its customers and is working hard to improve its 4G coverage. Three was also the first mobile network provider to offer its customers plans with completely unlimited data.
What’s Good About Them?
Three is one of two UK providers to offer completely unlimited data on 3G, but is the only provider to offer unlimited – known as ‘all-you-can-eat’ mobile data on 4G. Tethering, or using your phone as a personal hotspot is also permitted on all Three pay monthly and SIM only plans, although if you have an all-you-can-eat data plan you’ll be limited to 2GB tethering for new phone plans and 4GB if you have a SIM only plan.
With Three, you won’t pay any extra for 4G speeds. If 4G is not currently available in your area, you’ll be able to upgrade from 3G to 4G for free once the network rolls out.
Three is also a great choice if you don’t want to overspend on your phone bill – choosing a capped rather than an unlimited plan means that Three will send you a text when you’re running low on your allowance, and once you’ve ran out you won’t be able to use any more without first buying an add-on.
The Feel at Home feature from Three helps you to avoid unnecessary charges if you go abroad, and you’ll be able to use your phone at no extra charge in 16 different countries. Calls and texts to the UK as well as internet usage is permitted. If you have an all-you-can-eat data plan you’ll be limited to 25GB, and tethering isn’t permitted when abroad.
Thanks to a partnership with Virgin Media, Three customers will have access to free Wi-Fi at entrance halls, platforms and escalators at 130 tube stations across London.
Three was also the first network to offer 0800 calls for free – usually a chargeable service on mobile.
How Good Is Three Mobile Network Coverage?
Because Three was the fourth and final network to launch 4G back in 2013, it’s currently catching up on coverage. However, it’s working hard to improve its overall coverage and recently its customers have voted it the UK’s most reliable mobile network provider.
However, from 3pm to midnight Three operates a TrafficSense policy which prevents congestion at peak times. Although this doesn’t constrain the amount of data that you’ll be able to use, it can cause activities such as file sharing, downloading and video viewing to be slowed down.
If you’re thinking of joining Three and would like to check your coverage, there is a free network coverage checking tool on their website.
Do They Offer SIM Only Deals?
If you’re thinking of joining Three but don’t want to commit to a lengthy 24 month contract or don’t need a new handset, you may want to consider getting one of their many SIM only deals. Three offer a range of SIM only deals to suit all needs and budgets, and you can sign up for either 30 days or 12 months. There are also SIM only deals available that offer all-you-can-eat data, so you don’t need to miss out on browsing.
All of Three’s SIM only deals also include use in 16 other countries at no extra charge, free calls to 0800 and 0500 numbers, and permit tethering. You’ll also get 4G on a SIM only plan at no extra cost, providing that you’ve got a 4G enabled handset and live in an area that is covered.
If you’re thinking of switching to Three from another provider and would like to keep your existing handset, bear in mind that it won’t work on the Three network unless it is unlocked. If you’re not sure whether or not your phone is unlocked, you’ll be able to find out by contacting your current mobile network provider. In order to unlock your phone, you may or may not be asked to pay a fee.
If you’d like to bring your current phone number over to Three then it’s easy – simply request a PAC code from your current provider, and give this code to Three.
Deals for £15 Per Month or Less
If you’re thinking of switching from Pay and Go and don’t want to pay too much for your new SIM only contract, Three offer a great range of deals for less than £15 per month if you sign up for a 12 month contract. For just £8 per month, you can get 200 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of 4G mobile data, or, you can pay just £11 per month for 200 minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of data or 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB data. No matter what deal you’re on, you’ll also get unlimited free calls to 0800 and 0500 numbers. If you don’t feel ready to commit to a 12 month contract but still want a great deal for less than £15, you can get 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data for just £14 on a 30 day rolling contract.
Unlimited Data Plans
Three pride themselves on being the first mobile network to offer unlimited ‘all-you-can-eat’ data, and if you love using your phone for browsing or use the internet for messaging and video calling you’ll be glad to know that there are a few great SIM only deals on Three that don’t limit your data at all. The cheapest one is at £17 per month for 12 months, and you get 200 minutes and unlimited texts included. If you’d prefer a 30 day deal, you can get it for just £3 extra per month. Want more minutes? For just £22 per month you can sign up to a 12 month SIM only contract that offers 600 minutes and all-you-can-eat texts and data – bargain!
Phone Glued to Your Hand?
Three knows that some people just love using their phone, and if you’re rarely ever seen without your mobile phone or people have commented that it’s like an extension of your arm, you’re definitely in luck with Three. Sick and tired of going over your current contract or having to top up more because you’ve used up all your credit? Three feels your pain, which is why they’re offering All-you-can-eat minutes, texts AND data for just £27 per month if you sign up for 12 months – yes £27, you did read that right! And there’s no need to worry if you’re not a fan of signing up to a 12 month contract, as you can still get all-you-can-eat everything on a 30 day rolling contract for the bargain price of £30 per month. What’s stopping you?
Not Paying By Direct Debit?
It’s good to note that all the prices mentioned in this article are based upon the assumption that you’ll be paying for your SIM only deal by direct debit or another similar recurring payment option. If you’re not, you’ll be charged £5 extra per month for your contract – but at those prices, they’re still great value for money!
