Are you looking for a new deal on your mobile phone tariff, but don’t want a new phone? Well, you may be able to get what you need whilst you’re shopping for groceries – Tesco Mobile has a great range of SIM only contract deals, and we’ve put together some of the best for you here.
About Tesco Mobile
Tesco Mobile Limited is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) running in the UK, Ireland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The network is operated by the supermarket chain Tesco and runs off the O2 network except for in Hungary where the network operator is Vodafone and Ireland, where it runs off the Three network. Tesco Mobile was first established as part of the supermarket company Tesco in March 2003, and Tesco was the first supermarket to enter the mobile industry. Currently, it offers 4G service and has 99% coverage in the UK.
What’s Good About Them?
Tesco Mobile pay monthly contracts and SIM only deals offer 4G at no extra cost. With 4G, you can download information such as music, videos, maps and photos a lot more quickly than you can using a 3G service. As it’s a mobile virtual network operator, Tesco’s 4G coverage in the UK will only expand as quickly as O2’s does. If you’re thinking of joining Tesco Mobile and would like to know beforehand whether or not you’ll get 4G coverage, you can use their handy mobile coverage checker on the Tesco Mobile website to make sure.
Tesco Mobile also have a great advantage in that they give the option to cap your contract usage. Nobody likes nasty surprises when it comes to their phone bill, and with Tesco Mobile you can ensure that you never go over your monthly allowance or have to pay any extra for your bill.
If you have a Tesco Clubcard, you can link your Clubcard to your Tesco Mobile account and start earning Clubcard points from as soon as you begin using Tesco Mobile. Clubcard points add up to provide you with vouchers and discounts that you can use on your Tesco grocery shopping and more.
How Good Is Their Network Coverage?
Because Tesco Mobile uses the O2 network, their coverage is only ever as good as O2’s coverage is. If you’re already with O2 and get good coverage in your area, you can be sure that you’ll also get good coverage on Tesco Mobile as well.
O2’s 4G coverage reaches around half of the UK population and is being rolled out to other areas. If you’re thinking of joining Tesco Mobile but aren’t sure whether or not you’re in an area that gets 4G coverage we recommend using the coverage checker tools on either the Tesco Mobile or O2 websites beforehand to make sure you’ll get 4G coverage at work or home. If you can’t get 4G coverage in your area, you’ll be able to get a 3G plan and upgrade to 4G for no extra charge once O2 rolls out 4G to where you are.
Do They Offer SIM Only Deals?
For those who want to get a phone contract but don’t necessarily need a new handset and are happy with the one that they have, SIM only deals are a handy alternative. Tesco offers a range of 30 day and 12 month SIM only contract deals, and is also the only network to offer a range of 18 month SIM only contract deals for those who don’t mind being tied into a contract for longer in order to get more for their money.
Tesco Mobile offers a range of SIM only deals to suit most needs and budgets, and these range from around £10 per month to £30 per month depending on the length and tariff that you choose. None of Tesco Mobile’s SIM only deals come with unlimited texts, however, so if you’re worried about going over your texts you may wish to think about going for a deal that offers a larger texting allowance or request that a cap be put on your contract so that you don’t go over.
Although Tesco Mobile doesn’t have any options for unlimited data, you can get up to 8GB of data which is definitely enough for browsing and downloading. However, if you’re thinking of using your Tesco Mobile SIM only plan to download large files or stream videos you might find that you’ll use up a lot of your allowance, so it’s a good idea to add a cap to your plan to make sure that you don’t end up with any unexpected charges on your bill.
If you’re planning to move to Tesco Mobile from another network and want to bring your handset with you, you’ll need to make sure that your handset is unlocked first, although Tesco Mobile SIM cards will work in some O2 mobile phone handsets. If you’re not sure whether or not your current handset is unlocked you will need to contact your current network who will be able to unlock it if needed. If you are an iPhone user bear in mind that most iPhones lock to the network of the first SIM card used in them.
Why Choose Tesco Mobile?
Along with having the highest levels of customer satisfaction in the industry and a number of notable awards under their belt, Tesco Mobile is a great network to be with as they always put you – the customer – first. Their UK customer service call centres are open 365 days a year, and the salespeople in their shops don’t get paid any commission – so you don’t have to worried about being talked into a deal that you didn’t really want to get. There’s also a massive choice of SIM only deals – read on to find out about some of the best of them and see if there’s one that suits you.
Deals for Less Than £10
Whether you’re getting your child their first phone so that they can keep in touch with you, want a deal for an elderly relative who doesn’t want to spend any more than £10 a month on a phone, or even just want a cheap deal for yourself, Tesco offer some great SIM only deals for the bargain price of £10 per month or less. If you have a phone that doesn’t use data, it’s just £7.50 per month for 12 months for 500 minutes and 500 texts, great for talkers and texters! Or, if you’d like a bit of everything, sign up for 12 months to get 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 500MB mobile data for the same price.
Don’t mind stretching the budget? For the full £10 per month, you can get 500 minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB of data when you sign up for 18 months. Don’t want to commit? Sign up to a 30 day rolling contract that gives you 500 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data for £10.
18 Month Contracts
Tesco is the only network currently to offer 18 month long SIM only phone contracts, and by signing up for this longer deal, you’ll also be saving yourself some money and getting more for what you pay. If you don’t mind committing to a contract or usually have a Pay Monthly contract with a handset that typically lasts 24 months, signing up for an 18 month contract might be the best option for you. £15 per month will get you a whopping 3000 minutes, 5000 texts and 3GB data – we think that’s an absolute bargain!
Big on Data?
If you’ve got a smartphone that you use a lot to access the internet, you’ll be pleased to know that Tesco Mobile offer plans with up to 8GB of mobile data, which can be 4G at no extra cost. If you decide to go for a plan with less data, they also provide you with a handy data calculator to work out a rough idea of how much data you’ll need, and give you the option to add more data to your plan if you think you’ll use more than you originally chose. And getting the maximum amount of data doesn’t need to break the bank – for the bargain price of £25 per month you’ll get 5000 minutes and texts and 8GB of data meaning you’ll always be connected! This price is subject to signing up for a 12 month deal, however if you’re not willing to commit to a contract, you can get the same deal for just £2.50 per month more if you sign up for a one month contract which you can change whenever you feel like it once the first month’s up.
