About GiffGaff

GiffGaff is a mobile phone network that runs as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) using the O2 network. GiffGaff is owned by O2’s owners Telefonica and was launched in November 2009.

Thanks to the low priced deals and flexible payment options that are offered by GiffGaff, it is a viable alternative to most of its higher-priced competitors. GiffGaff has gained popularity amongst customers with a poor credit rating as many deals don’t require a credit check.

GiffGaff is unique in that it has a community-driven customer service outlook where active members can save money and earn cashback for helping others with their mobile phone related issues.

What’s Good About Them?

One of the best things about GiffGaff is that they’ve recently started offering mobile handsets and have one of the cheapest and most versatile ways to get hold of the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 plus. With each iPhone that GiffGaff sell, you will have the option to either buy the phone outright or spread the cost over a period of six, twelve, eighteen or twenty-four months depending on which best suits your needs. There is also the option to choose a goodybag (SIM only deal) alongside the phone, which you can change or cancel whenever you like.

Although GiffGaff is too small to have had its customer service rated by Ofcom, general customer feedback about the service that they have received has so far been quite positive.

GiffGaff has a unique, flexible approach to handset contracts. Once you have selected the handset of your choice, you can choose whether to pay for it in full or in a series of monthly payments. You then add your goodybag, and the monthly cost of your handset is combined with the monthly cost of your SIM plan.

GiffGaff is also great for customers with poor credit, as their SIM only deals don’t require a credit check, meaning that anyone can get one even if you’ve been declined for a mobile phone contract in the past.

Free GiffGaff to GiffGaff calls means that if you have any friends or family members on the network, you’ll be able to call each other as much as you want, any time of the day or night completely free of charge.

How Good Is Their Network Coverage?

Because GiffGaff runs on the O2 network, their coverage reaches 99% of the UK population. However, in certain areas you may not be able to get 3G or 4G. If you’re thinking of joining GiffGaff and would like to check whether or not you’ll get good coverage at work or home, the best way to do so is to use the network coverage tool on the GiffGaff website. Alternatively, if you are currently with O2 and get good coverage, you will also get good coverage with GiffGaff.

Do GiffGaff Offer SIM Only Deals?

Yes! GiffGaff started as a mobile phone network that exclusively offered SIM only deals, and have only very recently started selling mobile phone handsets.

All of GiffGaff’s SIM only deals are one month long, and there’s never any need to sign a lengthy contract – you can change or cancel whenever you like. Even if you’re in the middle of a month and decide your current goodybag isn’t what you’re looking for you don’t need to wait until the end of the month to upgrade it – simply change it there and then!

GiffGaff’s SIM only deals range in price from £5 to £20 per month, and certain deals come with benefits – for example you can get a free minute for each minute you get called from any number that isn’t on the GiffGaff network. They also offer a competitively priced goodybag that offers completely unlimited minutes, texts and 4G data.

If you’re planning to get a GiffGaff SIM only contract or goodybag, it’s important to note that your handset will need to be unlocked. If your mobile handset is locked to any other network including the O2 network a GiffGaff SIM will not work in it. If you’re not sure whether or not your handset is unlocked, the best way to find out is to either ring your current network provider or try a SIM from a different network in it to see whether or not it will work.

If your mobile phone is locked, don’t panic – you can request an unlocking code from your current network provider. Some networks will provide this free of charge whilst others charge a fee.

If you want to move your current number over to GiffGaff when you sign up for a goodybag, it’s simple – just contact your current network provider and request a PAC code. Once you’ve got this code, all you need to do is contact GiffGaff with the code you’ve been given. Because GiffGaff don’t have any high street stores, you’ll need to do this online.

£10 Per Month or Less

If you’re currently on Pay and Go and top up £10 per month, it makes sense that you’d want to find a great SIM only deal that won’t require you to pay any more than you’re already spending on your phone, or even less if possible. For just £5 per month – so if you’re topping up £10 now, you’ll save 50% – you can get 100 minutes, unlimited texts, and 100MB mobile data, along with completely free unlimited calls to other GiffGaff numbers. This deal also has another great benefit – for every minute you receive a call, you’ll get an extra free minute – providing it isn’t another GiffGaff user who’s called you.

Need a little bit more than 100MB data, but still don’t want to go over your £10 budget? No problem! GiffGaff offer a deal for just £7.50 per month that includes 250 minutes, unlimited texts, and 500MB data. Or, if you’d like 1GB data, 500 minutes and unlimited texts, you can get that for just £10 a month. Both deals have unlimited free calls to other GiffGaff users – so if you call someone a lot, why not tell them about GiffGaff too.

Under £20

With a budget of £20, you’re unlikely to get a lot for your money on a Pay Monthly phone contract with a handset or even on Pay and Go these days. However, with a GiffGaff goodybag, you can really make your £20 – or less – stretch. Pay just £15 per month to get a whopping 1000 minutes, unlimited texts, and 4GB data – an absolutely great all-round deal that’s suitable for those who equally love to talk, text and browse! Or for just £3 extra per month increase your tariff to 2000 minutes, unlimited texts and 6GB data, all for less than £20 – it’s a no-brainer!

Never Off The Phone?

If your phone is like an extension of your arm and you’re rarely ever seen off it or without it, you’ll probably be looking for a deal that lets you use your phone as much as you possibly can without running up some massive charges for going over. However, anyone who uses their phone a lot and wants a contract with a lot of minutes, texts and data knows how expensive these can be on a Pay Monthly contract with a handset, or if you’ve been thinking of going over to Pay and Go you could end up topping up absolutely loads in order to get the use that you want from your phone. But, if you’re happy with the handset you already have, GiffGaff has the answer. Get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, AND Always On data for just £20! Always On means that you’ll get 6GB of data to use from 8am to midnight, and from midnight to 7:59am you’ll get unlimited data – great if you work nights, or simply like to stay up late browsing on your phone.

Tethering

If you’ve got another smartphone or a laptop, or even if you have a friend or family member who’s got a laptop or smartphone and can’t get a good internet connection you can use your data connection included with your GiffGaff goodybag to tether. So, if you’re ever in the situation where your home broadband is down or you’re out with your laptop and there’s no Wi-Fi, there’s no need to worry as you’ll still be able to connect to the internet!
